Washington, June 14 – Israeli President Shimon Peres called for renewed peace talks Wednesday night as President Obama honored him with America’s highest civilian award.

“I believe that peace with the Palestinians is more urgent than ever before. It is necessary. It is crucial. It is possible. A delay may worsen its chances,” he told guests at a special White House ceremony to honor the awarding of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Peres was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 along with the late Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin, the slain Israeli Prime Minister. They were honored by the Nobel committee in the wake of the signing the historic Oslo Accords, “for their efforts to create peace in the Middle East.”

President Obama in his own remarks paid tribute to the longtime Israeli leader’s peacemaking instincts as well.

“Shimon knows that a nation’s security depends, not just on the strength of its arms, but upon the righteousness of its deeds — its moral compass,” Obama said. “He knows, as Scripture teaches, that we must not only seek peace, but we must pursue peace. And so it has been the cause of his life — peace, security and dignity, for Israelis and Palestinians and all Israel’s Arab neighbors. And even in the darkest moments, he’s never lost hope in – as he puts it – ‘a Middle East that is not a killing field but a field of creativity and growth.’”

During his speech at the awards dinner, the Israeli President said the time was “ripe” for a revival of negotiations.

“A firm basis already exists,” Peres said. “A solution of two national states: A Jewish state – Israel. An Arab state – Palestine. The Palestinians are our closest neighbors. I believe they may become our closest friends.”

Obama said Peres recognizes the “necessity of strength” and the importance of working with American presidents.

“That’s why I’ve worked with Prime Minister Netanyahu to ensure that the security cooperation between the United States and Israel is closer and stronger than it has ever been — because the security of the State of Israel is non-negotiable, and the bonds between us are unbreakable,” Obama said.

Peres, addressing about 140 dignitaries in the White House East Room, also thanked Obama for pressuring Iran to end its suspected nuclear weapons program.

“Mr. President, you worked hard to build a world coalition to meet this immediate threat,” Peres said. “You started, rightly, with economic sanctions. You made it clear, rightly again, that all options are on the table.”

During his visit to the U.S., Peres has met with Obama and with Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, and participated in a forum with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the Brookings Institution’s Saban Center.

Everybody seems to talk past each other. Peres wants a Palestinian state soon, I have no doubt based on ’67 borders with minor land swaps, because he understands the need for it from Israel’s perspective. Netanyahu wants a Palestinian state based on a few disconnected cantons surrounded by Jewish settlements. The Palestinians will never accept Netanyahu’s vision, and Likud will never accept the Peres vision. In the meantime, if two states don’t happen soon, the result will be one state, where Jews are the minority, and the Zionist dream is over.

    • Those who have read the Holy Scriptures know the Zionist dream will never die and one day will become a reality, and if the signs of the times are any indication, it will be sooner rather than later.

      • Marc Paige says:

Religious extremists have hijacked Herzl’s dream, and if Israel continues in the direction it is going, two states will be impossible, and one state will be the result. Holding on to Ariel, will mean letting go of a Jewish, democratic nation. That’s sad.

The politically correct owners of the NYT aren’t speaking truth to Islamist lies, else they would publish this information about CAIR. And that sonnavabithch Islamic major who murdered US servicemen while shrieking “Allahu Akhbar” (Allah is greater) hasn’t been tried, convicted, and executed. No hooplas about this in the NYT.

Is their silence due to the fact that they are Jews? Or are they following orders from the BHO administration? Or does their silence have something to do with being indebted to middle east oil-funded holding companies? Or could it be that these Jews believe they are not permitted to attack anyone who is not a Jew? Hence they focus their firepower only on Israel?

I can name the Jews of Israel who allowed arab predators to invade Israel and then helped transform them into “palestinians.” Can you?

  4. Mr. Obama states that “a nation’s security depends not just on the strength of its arms, but upon the righteousness of its deeds — its moral compass. ”

The righteousness of its deeds —its moral compass?……hmmmm.

What kind of righteousness and morality is America known for under the Obama administration? Well, let’s take a look at a couple of things to help us determine that fact:

Mr. Barack Obama has and does publicly and unashamedly support and promote the murder of children in their mother’s womb. Regarding his position of believing that people should be allowed to murder their unborn children in the womb, he arrogantly proclaimed (and I quote) “I will not yield and Planned Parenthood will not yield.” (IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE THIS, I CHALLENGE YOU TO SIMPLY LOOK UP THE PHRASE AND YOU WILL FIND THAT THESE WERE HIS EXACT WORDS!)

He has also unashamedly promotes unnatural and immoral sexual behavior among same-sex individuals, whom he said he believes should be allowed to marry, which our Creator calls an “abomination”.

The irony of all this is that Mr. Obama does this while proclaiming himself to be Christian!! A true Christian WOULD NEVER PROMOTE SINFUL BEHAVIOR, BUT CONTRARILY…THE REPENTING OF IT!

If “a nation’s security depends on the righteousness of its deeds”, then I fear for the United States of America as its deeds are anything but righteous or moral.

    BE NOT DECEIVED.

He that has ears to hear, let him hear.

The comments of Watchmans Warning shows us that Americans can be just as theologically extreme and dangerous as the Taliban!

      • The forgiveness an atonement of sins made available by the shed blood of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, is neither extreme nor dangerous. It is God’s simply but majestic plan of forgiveness to many. However, it must be duly noted by you and anyone else who questions it, that God’s mercy and forgiveness is not open-ended.

To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. …Hebrews 3:15

God’s forgiveness is available to those who of a repentant heart, turn to Him.
